YA Romance tropes I adore.
YA romance is not only one of my favourite genres to write but it is also one of my go to reading areas too! I love nothing better than kicking back with a cute novel that hits me right in the feels! So;
Here are my top 5 tropes in YA Romance.
- Coming of age / first love.
I adore novels that capture a turning point in a character's life so for me this trope is always a hit! Even when set around a predictable theme like tuning 16 or graduating high school, as long as the development of the plot takes the protagonist from girl to woman or man to boy as they find love I'm happy! There's something really sweet about this theme and the plot doesn't have to be over complicated to be effective.
- Fake relationship.
Oh what a tangled web! These stories always have me gripped from very early on. Yes, it's a bit cliche and yes we all know that whilst pretending to be together the characters are going to fall for each other but we are still here for it! I freaking love the cuteness of how these relationships develop and the lingering moments as they start to catch feelings! Yes, just YES!
- Plain Jane gets the hottie.
I am always rooting for the underdog so when there is an opportunity in a novel for the plain Jane nerd to get the hot guy, you better believe I'm in! Sure all of the hot cheerleaders are throwing themselves at him and he looks like a real life Disney prince, but that doesn't mean he has to be completely shallow damn it! I love it when authors let the girl with the wit and brains get him for once! Slay sis!
- Meet cute.
Cheesy, predictable and totally amazing! I cannot get enough of a good chance meeting that turns into love! Maybe it's the hopeless romantic in me, but I never fail to get drawn in by the idea of two mismatched strangers randomly meeting and falling head over heels in love against the odds. Bonus points if this trope is paired with a celebrity / royal prince trope! Give me the impossible!
- Love triangle.
Oh it's a classic but I think this tropes works better in YA novels than any other genre. Maybe it's the naivety of the characters that makes it more effective (as if love isn't complicated enough already as a teenager, along come two love interests!) but I just find this trope more convincing if the characters are younger and less experienced. I also think the moral conflict and complication of the need to choose between two suitors works really well when one possible lover is good on paper and the other is a bit risky. I love hearing the character conflicted and pondering over the pros and cons before ultimately having to decide whether to follow their head or their heart!
